New Jersey Senator Cory Booker shared some very happy news this week, he is now engaged to his longtime girlfriend, Alexis Lewis. The 56-year-old senator, who once ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020, revealed that he popped the question during a special trip to Hawaii.
Booker explained to reporters that the proposal happened on the island of Kauai. Lewis thought she was simply going with friends to take part in a traditional Hawaiian welcome ceremony. She expected something small, like being greeted with flower leis. But when they arrived, the surprise began. A hula dancer, a Hawaiian dancer, a Polynesian dancer, and a man playing a ukulele appeared to perform for them. After their second song, more performers joined in and sang a tune that had deep meaning for Lewis.
Booker shared that this particular song was one she had told him about early in their relationship. She once mentioned it was the exact song she wanted played at her wedding. When she heard it, she was filled with joy. She sang and danced along with the performers before rushing over to thank them. She exclaimed, “Oh my god, this is the song I wanted at my wedding. Thank you so much!”
At that moment, Booker stepped in and told her the truth. He said, Honey, this is actually the song being played at your engagement. He then got down on one knee and proposed. Booker laughed as he recalled that Lewis was so overwhelmed with excitement that she blacked out and only fully realized what had happened after he later showed her the photos of him kneeling to propose.
Lewis is a successful professional in her own right. She currently serves as the Vice President of Investments at Brasa Capital Management, a real estate investment company. Before that, she worked in Los Angeles as an economic development aide in the mayor’s office.
Booker himself has never been married, and his personal life has often been a topic of public conversation. When he first ran for the Senate in 2013, people questioned him about his sexuality. At the time, he firmly responded, The question really should not be whether I’m gay or straight. The real question should be, why are you asking? It doesn’t make any difference in what kind of senator I am or will be.
In the past, Booker was also in a well-known relationship with actress Rosario Dawson, who openly supported him during his 2020 presidential campaign. Dawson has since reacted to Booker’s engagement news, leaving a warm comment on Instagram that read, Love Love! Congratulations you two!
Even while celebrating his personal milestone, Booker continues to be active in politics. He has recently drawn attention for delivering a record-breaking 25-hour speech in the Senate, warning that the United States is facing a crisis. That speech sparked speculation about whether he may consider another run for the presidency in 2028.
Right now, though, Booker is focusing on the ongoing battles in Congress. As lawmakers prepare for a budget showdown, he has made it clear that he will oppose any Republican-backed proposals that he believes could harm Americans, especially people in New Jersey. I can’t speak for other senators, Booker said, “but I’m going to make my voice heard. This is a time to stand and fight. I will not give my vote away to Donald Trump on a budget that hurts people.
He added passionately, We are at a crossroads. I am going to fight against any kind of budget that puts Americans at risk. There comes a time when everyone has to take a stand for what is right, and for me,that time is now.
