Port Harcourt Refinery in Nigeria is fully operational, according to the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN).
This confirmation comes after rumors circulated that the refinery had shut down shortly after resuming production.
PENGASSAN President, Comrade Festus Osifo, clarified that while the refinery is functioning, there are some limitations in the production process.
He explained that the Port Harcourt refinery’s Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) is working, producing various products like kerosene, diesel, and naphtha.
However, the old refinery was not designed to produce aviation fuel, so it focuses on three main products: naphtha, AGO, and DPK.
Osifo also addressed concerns about the refinery’s production processes, stating that the blending process is a normal global practice.
He emphasized that no refinery can produce PMS with a single CDU, citing the example of the Dangote Refinery.
The Port Harcourt Refinery has been operational since 1965 and has a refining capacity of 210,000 barrels per day.
The refinery’s rehabilitation and upgrade project, which began in 2021, aims to restore the refinery to 90% of its design capacity.
