Boko Haram insurgents have launched a devastating attack on a military base in Sabon Gari, Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State, k*lling dozens of soldiers and vigilantes.
The assault, which occurred on Saturday around 4 p.m., was confirmed by security and local sources.
According to eyewitnesses, the heavily armed Boko Haram insurgents overwhelmed the troops despite a strong defense.
The base, which has endured over 100 attacks in the past, suffered significant damage, with operational vehicles and buildings set on fire.
The Boko Haram insurgents also seized all the armament at the base.
Security sources revealed that the attackers used a surveillance drone to assess the base before the onslaught.
“At first, we thought the drone was part of a military operation,” a source said.
This tactic is part of Boko Haram’s growing use of surveillance drones, which have been deployed in the region over the past two weeks.
The exact de@th toll remains uncertain, but more than 12 bodies have been recovered so far.
The insurgents are believed to have launched the attack from Mandara Gau in Biu Local Government Area, about 25 kilometers away.
They have reportedly taken over a mango plantation, which now serves as their hideout.
The attack highlights the ongoing security challenges in the region and the need for increased vigilance and cooperation between security forces and local communities.
The military has yet to release an official statement on the attack.
