US Supreme Court has declined to intervene in the sentencing of President-elect Donald Trump in a hush-money case, paving the way for the proceeding to move forward as scheduled.
Trump’s legal team had filed an emergency motion with the US Supreme Court, seeking to delay the sentencing, which is set to take place on Friday.
However, the US Supreme Court denied the request, effectively clearing the way for Judge Juan Merchan to impose a sentence.
The case stems from Trump’s 2024 trial on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, to which he pleaded not guilty.
Although Judge Merchan has indicated that he will not impose jail time, fines, or probation, Trump’s lawyers argue that a felony conviction would still have significant consequences.
The US Supreme Court’s decision comes just over a week before Trump’s inauguration as US President on January 20.
Despite the conservative majority on the court, including three justices appointed by Trump during his first term, the justices declined to grant the president-elect’s request for a delay.
