Trump and Biden have finally negotiated a ceasefire deal in Gaza, the deal has been reached after months of negotiations, and both outgoing President Joe Biden and incoming President Donald Trump are claiming credit for the breakthrough.
Biden announced the deal on Wednesday, stating that the final agreement closely mirrors a proposal he made in May.
He emphasized that his team developed and negotiated the plan, which will largely be implemented by the incoming administration.
However, Trump was quick to take to social media to claim a share of the credit.
He attributed the success of the deal to his administration’s commitment to seeking peace and negotiating deals to ensure the safety of Americans and their allies.
Trump and Biden had dispatched their Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, to join the negotiations in Doha, where he worked together with another envoy, Brett McGurk.
Despite the competing claims, a senior official from the Biden administration acknowledged Witkoff’s role in helping to secure the deal.
The White House press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, explained that Trump and Biden had wanted their teams involved in the negotiations, given that Trump will be responsible for implementing the ceasefire agreement.
The deal marks a significant development in the Gaza conflict, and its implementation will be closely watched in the coming days.
As Biden noted, “In these past few days, we have been speaking as one team,” highlighting the bipartisan effort that went into securing the agreement.
