Growing up in a home where his mother, Beverly Vance, struggled with drug addiction, Vance experienced considerable instability.

His parents divorced when he was young, and he was primarily raised by his maternal grandparents, James and Bonnie Vance, whom he affectionately called “Papaw” and “Mamaw.”

Mamaw, in particular, was a pivotal figure in his life, offering both the tough love and the emotional support that helped steer him away from the pitfalls that affected many in his community.

She was a “blue dog” Democrat, deeply religious, and a firm believer in personal responsibility, which she instilled in Vance.

After graduating from Middletown High School in 2003, Vance enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.

His decision was influenced by the aftermath of 9/11 and a desire for structure and purpose.

He served for four years as a combat correspondent, or military journalist, with the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing.

His deployment to Iraq in 2005 for six months was not in a combat role but involved accompanying civilian press, taking photographs, and writing articles about the daily lives of Marines.

This period was transformative for Vance; he credits the Marine Corps with teaching him discipline, the value of service, and how to live as an adult.

He earned a Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal and a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal during his service.

His experiences in the military also provided him with the GI Bill, which funded his subsequent education.

After his military service, Vance attended Ohio State University, where he excelled academically, graduating summa cum laude with a degree in political science and philosophy in 2009.

He then moved on to Yale Law School, where he felt like an outsider but managed to connect with a group of like-minded students.

Yale was not just a place of legal education but also where he met his future wife, Usha Chilukuri, whom he married in 2014.

JD Vance’s Political Journey

JD Vance’s political journey began with the publication of his memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis” in 2016.

The book was both a personal recount and a broader commentary on the socio-economic decay of America’s working class, particularly in Appalachia and the Rust Belt.

It resonated with many, becoming a bestseller and earning Vance a national platform.

While “Hillbilly Elegy” brought him fame, it also drew criticism for its portrayal of Appalachian culture, with some accusing him of perpetuating negative stereotypes.

Initially a ‘Never Trump’ advocate, Vance was vocally critical of Donald Trump during the 2016 election, calling him “cultural heroin” and even comparing him to “America’s Hitler” in private messages.

However, his stance shifted dramatically. By the time he ran for the U.S. Senate in Ohio in 2022, Vance had embraced Trump’s endorsement, winning the seat by defeating Democratic incumbent Tim Ryan.

His campaign focused on economic issues, advocating for the revitalization of manufacturing jobs and addressing the opioid crisis, which had personally affected his family.

In the Senate, Vance quickly established himself as a conservative voice, opposing abortion, same-sex marriage, and gun control while supporting initiatives like school vouchers, border security, and critiquing U.S. military aid to Ukraine.

His tenure in the Senate was marked by legislative proposals like the Dismantle DEI Act to ban federal diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, reflecting his critical stance on what he terms “woke” culture.

In July 2024, Donald Trump announced JD Vance as his vice-presidential running mate, highlighting Vance’s transformation from critic to ally.

Their campaign culminated in victory, leading to Vance being sworn in as Vice President on January 20, 2025.

As Vice President, Vance has been involved in key diplomatic engagements, such as meetings with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng, and has played a role in domestic policy, including casting tie-breaking votes in the Senate for cabinet confirmations.

Vance’s personal life includes his marriage to Usha Vance, a Yale-educated attorney, and their three children.

Together, they navigate the complexities of public life while maintaining a commitment to their family values.

His story from poverty and military service to one of the highest offices in the land underscores a narrative of resilience, education, and the belief in the American Dream.
