Abuja, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has refuted viral social media claims alleging that the Nigerian government has abandoned its citizens in Iran amid escalating tensions with Israel.
In a statement released on Saturday by the ministry’s spokesperson, Mr. Kimiebi Ebienfa, Tuggar described the reports as misleading and unfounded, stressing that the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran is still fully operational and committed to ensuring the safety and welfare of all Nigerian nationals in the country.
Due to ongoing security threats and frequent bombings in Tehran, regular embassy operations have been temporarily shifted to remote coordination. Tuggar noted that the embassy staff continue to work actively to support Nigerian citizens, despite the disruption.
As part of proactive measures, the embassy is collaborating with the Government of Armenia to facilitate a safe evacuation route through Yerevan.
Nigerians in Iran are urged to remain calm and maintain contact with designated community coordinators in the three previously arranged safe zones. They are also advised to join the Nigerian group on the Eitaa messaging app for real-time updates.
