AbdulRazaq Under Fire as Corruption Allegations Rock Kwara

A damning exposé released today by civic advocacy platform Kwara Alternative has ignited controversy across the state, accusing Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of running an administration “built on deception, corruption, and impunity.”

The tweet, titled “Behind the Curtain of Lies: AbdulRazaq’s Empire of Corruption Begins to Crumble (Series 1),” marks the beginning of what the group describes as a series of reports aimed at exposing what they claim is the systemic rot hidden behind the façade of good governance in Kwara.

“This is just the beginning,” the document warns, indicating that more revelations are set to follow.

Broken Promises and Betrayal

The exposé begins by referencing a 2020 public commitment made by Governor AbdulRazaq, in which he pledged that “there will be no protection for erring appointees and contractors.” Five years later, Kwara Alternative says this pledge now stands as one of the “most deceitful lies” of the administration.

“It was a carefully crafted script designed to fool the public,” the statement alleges, “while the real business of corruption, nepotism, and impunity thrives behind closed doors.”

Key Allegations: EFCC Cases and Job Racketeering

The report goes on to cite specific examples of individuals within the AbdulRazaq-led government who have either been indicted or are under investigation by anti-graft agencies, particularly the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC):

  • Kayode Oyin Zubair, former Senior Special Assistant on Community Development, is reportedly facing EFCC charges for criminal breach of trust.
  • Barr. Abdulgafar Ayinla Ayilara, also linked to the EFCC, allegedly continued to benefit politically under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara.
  • Hon. Mashood Alaka, the Governor’s current Special Adviser on Party Affairs, was implicated in a 2025 Informant247 investigation for allegedly defrauding a job seeker of ₦300,000 in 2022, under false promises of employment at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH).

Despite public outcry, the report alleges that the AbdulRazaq administration has consistently failed to take decisive action against these individuals, instead opting for silence and continued patronage.

Freedom of Information Bill Controversy

In what Kwara Alternative described as a blatant affront to democratic principles, the group criticized the recent passage of the Kwara State Freedom of Information (FOI) Bill; specifically a clause that forbids the release of public information without the Governor’s personal consent.

Civil society organization ENETSUD had previously raised concerns about this controversial clause, but the bill was passed regardless by what critics describe as a “rubber-stamp” House of Assembly.

“That clause did not protect governance; it protected corruption,” the statement read.

Double Standards and Democratic Backsliding

The report paints a bleak picture of governance in the state, accusing the AbdulRazaq administration of double standards:

  • “A government that jails its critics but shields its criminals.”
  • “A Governor who preaches anti-corruption but dines with fraud.”
  • “An administration that fears information and fights the truth.”

The group also referenced a Yoruba proverb, “Tí ojú ẹni bá ṣòro, kò yẹ kó sọ̀rọ̀,” loosely translated as “When your face is covered in shame, you shouldn’t be the one giving lectures” as a cultural indictment of the Governor’s perceived hypocrisy.

Political Reactions and Public Sentiment

The publication has already sparked reactions on social media and within political circles, with supporters of the government dismissing the report as “politically motivated,” while opposition voices have hailed it as a necessary reckoning.

Governor AbdulRazaq’s media team has yet to release an official response at the time of this report.

Kwara Alternative Vows to Continue Advocacy

The group concludes its report with a stern warning:

“The immunity protecting these acts of betrayal will vanish. And when that day comes, the EFCC and the people of Kwara will not forget the names, the faces, and the silence.”

Signed by Kwara Alternative and dated July 26, 2025, the publication accuses Governor AbdulRazaq of abandoning the promises of reform, transparency, and integrity upon which his administration was elected.

“You promised reform, but delivered rot. You claimed integrity, but your cabinet reeks of fraud.”

With this fiery debut, all eyes are now on Kwara as citizens, opposition figures, and advocacy groups brace for the next installment in the unfolding political saga.
