In a thrilling finale, Nigeria’s Super Falcons pulled off a dramatic second-half comeback to defeat hosts Morocco 3–2 and claim a record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title.
The match, held under intense pressure and expectations, saw the Super Falcons trailing 2–0 at halftime following an early Moroccan onslaught.
Ghizlane Chebbak opened the scoring for Morocco in the 12th minute, capitalizing on Nigeria’s shaky defense. Sanaâ Mssoudy doubled the lead in the 24th minute, assisted by Ibtissam Jraïdi, as the home crowd erupted in celebration.
But the second half told a different story.
Nigeria came out of the break with renewed energy, making two crucial substitutions; Omorinsola Babajide for Chinwendu Ihezuo (58’) and Joe Echegini for Halimatu Ayinde (59’). These changes would prove decisive.
In the 64th minute, Esther Okoronkwo sparked Nigeria’s comeback with a well-taken penalty to make it 2–1. Seven minutes later, she turned provider, assisting Folashade Ijamilusi for the equalizer in the 71st minute.
