In a bold move to revitalize its tourism-dependent economy, Sri Lanka has extended its free tourist visa policy to 40 countries, effective July 2025. The expanded policy eliminates visa fees for eligible travelers and marks a significant shift in the island nation’s efforts to attract global visitors.

The South Asian country hopes this initiative will stimulate economic recovery by boosting foreign exchange earnings and reviving its once-thriving tourism industry, which has struggled in recent years due to fiscal instability and currency challenges.

What the New Policy Offers

Under the new framework, travelers from eligible countries can enter Sri Lanka without paying visa processing fees, although an online application is still required. This waiver dramatically reduces travel costs and aims to make Sri Lanka a more competitive destination in Asia.

While the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system remains the standard application route, the usual visa fees have been completely waived for eligible travelers, significantly improving accessibility.

Countries Eligible for Free Sri Lanka Visa in 2025

Originally launched in 2023 with only seven participating countries including India, China, and Russia, the initiative has now been expanded to include tourism powerhouses across Asia, Europe, the Americas, Oceania, and the Middle East.

Though the official gazette is yet to be published, trusted sources confirm that the following countries are included:

  • United States
  • United Kingdom
  • Germany
  • France
  • South Korea
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Brazil
  • Australia
  • South Africa
  • And many more to follow

This makes Sri Lanka one of the few Asian countries offering such a broad, no-fee visa policy, particularly attractive to travelers looking for budget-friendly international destinations.

How to Apply for Sri Lanka’s Free Tourist Visa

Even though the visa fee is waived, tourists must still apply for entry through Sri Lanka’s ETA portal or if eligible; receive a visa on arrival at the airport.

Requirements for Application:

  • Passport valid for at least six months
  • Return flight ticket
  • Proof of accommodation in Sri Lanka
  • Optional but recommended: travel itinerary

Applicants can expect visa processing within 24 to 48 hours, though it’s advised to submit the application a few days ahead of travel to avoid any delays.

Duration of Stay:

The visa is valid for 30 days from the day of arrival and is issued as a single-entry permit. For tourists wishing to stay longer, extensions of up to 90 days can be requested through the Department of Immigration in Colombo.

Where to Track Visa Status

Tourists can easily check their application status via the official ETA website by entering their passport number and reference ID. Updates are provided in real-time, and applicants can download their visa approval once granted.

Purpose and Restrictions

The free tourist visa is strictly for leisure and tourism. It does not grant permission for work, business, or long-term residence. Visitors caught violating visa terms may face penalties or deportation.

Why Sri Lanka Is Offering Free Visas

According to Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister, Vijitha Herath, the decision to expand the policy is a strategic move to increase inbound tourism and stimulate domestic spending.

“While we expect to forgo about $66 million in visa revenues annually, we are confident that increased spending on hotels, local attractions, food, and transport will more than compensate for the shortfall,” Herath stated.

The government sees this as a long-term investment in national economic stability and global tourism competitiveness.

Economic Context: Why Now?

Following years of economic turbulence and foreign currency shortages, Sri Lanka has made strides toward recovery through fiscal reforms, debt restructuring, and monetary stabilization. Tourism; once one of the country’s largest revenue streams is now viewed as a critical pillar for sustainable growth.

With the Sri Lankan rupee stabilizing and the cost of travel remaining comparatively low, officials hope that a visa-free entry for key markets will reposition Sri Lanka as a top-tier travel destination in South Asia.

What This Means for Global Travelers

If you’re a traveler from one of the 40 listed countries, Sri Lanka just became more accessible than ever. From lush tea plantations and golden beaches to ancient cities and cultural festivals, the country offers an enriching experience for all types of tourists; now with zero visa fees.
