In a major step to bolster Nigeria’s fashion industry and creative economy, the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism, and the Creative Economy has launched a National Designer Training Scheme targeting designers, tailors, and fashion entrepreneurs.
The initiative, launched in partnership with The Fashion Academy Abuja, is designed to upskill local talent and position Nigeria as a fashion powerhouse across Africa and beyond. The program will focus on two key areas: Pattern Making & Professional Sewing Techniques and Fashion Business & Branding, providing participants with both creative and business acumen required to compete globally.
Minister Hannatu Musa Musawa emphasized the economic and cultural significance of the initiative. “Our creative industry holds immense potential, and this collaboration with The Fashion Academy Abuja is a bold step towards building a skilled workforce and positioning Nigeria as a leader in fashion innovation across Africa,” she stated.
She described the fashion sector as a key engine for youth employment, entrepreneurship, and cultural diplomacy, noting that it is part of a broader push to harness the soft power of Nigeria’s creative sector alongside music and film.
According to Nina Kwande, Director of The Fashion Academy Abuja, the program is structured to close existing skill and opportunity gaps in the industry.
“We are excited to work with the Ministry to nurture talent, foster entrepreneurship, and provide access to industry-ready training that truly makes a difference,” Kwande said, adding that the initiative will combine hands-on instruction with business mentorship.
Although Nigeria’s fashion industry contributes billions of naira annually to GDP, many local designers continue to face challenges ranging from limited infrastructure and financing to lack of access to international markets. The government hopes this new program will help reverse those trends.
How to apply
- The training scheme is part of the Creative Leap Acceleration Program (CLAP) and will open for applications from August 4 to August 11 via the official portal: clap.gov.ng.
- Applicants must submit required documentation online. Selected participants will receive practical training, mentorship, and access to business development networks.
- The program aims to build a pipeline of skilled professionals who can boost Nigeria’s local fashion economy while representing the country on global fashion stages.
