Oscar Onyema Biography
Oscar Nnaemeka Onyema was born on 19 August 1968 into the royal family of Ogwu-Ikpele in Anambra State, Nigeria. His father, His Royal Majesty Eze Valentine Benjamin Chukwuma Onyema III (Eze Onyema III), reigned as the traditional ruler of Ogwu-Ikpele for nearly five decades before passing away in early 2024.
Growing up the last of eight children, Oscar imbibed a blend of cultural pride and community responsibility from his upbringing in a household that combined traditional leadership with a strong emphasis on education and public service.
Education & Professional Qualifications
Onyema laid his academic foundations at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering. This rigorous technical training equipped him with analytical skills that would later underpin his data-driven approach to financial markets.
Seeking to deepen his financial expertise, he moved to the United States and completed a Master of Business Administration in Finance and Investments at Baruch College, City University of New York. His pursuit of executive excellence led him back to academia in 2014 when he attended the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School, a six-week intensive course designed for senior executives.

Before reshaping Nigeria’s capital markets, Onyema accrued over 20 years of experience in the United States financial sector. In 2001, he joined the American Stock Exchange (Amex) as Senior Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer, the first person of colour to hold that title at Amex. In this role, he managed critical market-structure initiatives and oversaw trading operations for small and mid-cap securities. Following Amex’s acquisition by NYSE Euronext in 2008, Onyema led the integration of Amex’s equity business into the NYSE and directed NYSE Amex’s trading operations, gaining invaluable insight into global exchange governance and technology platforms.
Transforming the Nigerian Stock Exchange (2012–2021)
Appointment as CEO
On 18 January 2012, the Securities and Exchange Commission of Nigeria approved Oscar Onyema’s appointment as Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE). At the time, the Exchange was grappling with declining liquidity, limited product offerings, and waning investor confidence. Onyema was tasked with reversing these trends and modernizing the institution to serve Africa’s largest economy.
The “Transformation Agenda”
Upon assuming leadership, Onyema launched a landmark “Transformation Agenda”, a multi-year strategic blueprint focused on:
- Demutualization: Transitioning the NSE from a member-owned mutual organization to a publicly listed, non-operating holding company. This move, completed in 2021, aligned the Exchange with global best practices and improved corporate governance.
- Technology & Infrastructure: Upgrading trading platforms to reduce latency, introduce electronic settlement, and expand product capabilities (e.g., exchange-traded funds, real-time market data).

On 29 July 2025, Oscar alongside four others joins the Board of New U.S Green Stock Market, GIX. The appointments, according to Dan Labovitz, Chairman and CEO of GIX, “represent a meaningful expansion of our board leadership and reinforce our mission to build a trusted, globally relevant exchange.”
GIX emphasized that the new board members bring extensive expertise across cybersecurity, ESG strategy, fintech, capital markets, and corporate governance, spanning both public and private sectors.
