Nigeria’s Senior Women’s Basketball Team-D’Tigress, have once again etched their name in the history books by winning their fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title, a feat never before achieved by any African team.
The reigning queens of the court claimed victory with a 78–64 triumph over Mali in a fiercely fought final held on the last day of the 2025 AfroBasket Championship. With this win, the team extended their incredible 29-game unbeaten streak in the tournament, a dominance that began in 2015.
Unlike their earlier blowout wins in the competition, D’Tigress faced intense resistance from Mali, who came into the final with purpose and firepower. The game opened with a sluggish start from Nigeria, who struggled to find their rhythm and allowed Mali to stay neck-and-neck through the first half, resulting in a 41–41 tie at halftime.
But champions don’t fade.
In the second half, coach Rena Wakama’s squad turned up the pressure. With their signature depth, defensive tenacity, and championship experience, D’Tigress pulled away, gradually building a double-digit lead that Mali couldn’t overcome.
This latest win adds to Nigeria’s growing legacy in African basketball. The team has now captured five AfroBasket titles in a row: 2017, 2019, 2021, 2023, and now 2025 while remaining undefeated throughout that streak. Their last loss in the competition came in 2015, when they finished third in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
With a flawless 29-0 record over the last decade, D’Tigress have not only dominated the continent—they’ve rewritten its basketball history.

As the world begins to take notice of Africa’s emerging basketball force, D’Tigress now look toward global tournaments with renewed confidence. Their consistent success has laid a strong foundation for greater challenges, including future appearances at the FIBA World Cup and Olympic Games.
