A heartbreaking incident has left the community of Nibo in Awka South LGA, Anambra State, in shock after a newly married POS operator was electrocuted when a high-tension cable snapped and fell on him.
The tragedy happened over the weekend right in front of his shop, which was situated directly under the power line. A disturbing viral video showed the victim’s lifeless body on the ground, with the fallen cable still emitting smoke.
Speaking on the incident, Managing Director of the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA), Ossy Onuko, described the death as “unfortunate” and stressed the urgent need for people to avoid trading or building under high-tension wires.
“This is something we have been warning against repeatedly,” Onuko said. “It is extremely dangerous to build or trade under high-tension wires. Sadly, this incident is a painful reminder of that danger.”
He explained that the ACTDA often faces criticism online when enforcing rules against such practices, but emphasised that the measures are meant to save lives, not punish people.
“It’s a suicide mission to have your shop, kiosk, or any roadside activity under a high-tension line. The loss of this precious life is tragic and completely avoidable. I pray for the peaceful repose of his soul, and I hope this serves as a wake-up call to others,” he added.
Onuko urged residents to take personal responsibility for their safety and educate others, rather than ignoring the dangers until tragedy strikes.
