Veteran Nollywood Actor Olusegun Akinremi, Popularly known as Chief Kanran, has died at the age of 70.The news was confirmed on Friday by Movie producer Seun Oloketuyi, who Announced on Instagram that the Actor passed away earlier that morning.
Chief Kanran was a well-known figure in the Yoruba film industry. He was admired for his unique acting style, elegant appearance, love for luxury, sharp sense of humor, and powerful performances in both stage plays and movies.
In a 2020 interview with PUNCH, the Actor explained that he left the movie industry because of politics and cliques. He said some people saw him as a threat because he refused to compromise on professionalism, which caused tension with others in the industry.
Chief Kanran started his career on stage before moving into television and film. He appeared in many Yoruba stage productions and gained fame through a popular NTA drama series. His popularity grew with his roles in Yoruba movies such as Ewe Orun, Aiye, Efunsetan Aniwura, Agbarin, and Bata Wahala. He was best known for playing kings, chiefs, or village elders, and often acted as a wealthy man on screen.
He began professional acting in 1975, playing the lead role in Kurunmi, a play by Prof. Ola Rotimi. He later appeared in the TV drama Mirror in the Sun and played a businessman in the soap opera Images.
One of his biggest career highlights was performing in Langbodo, Nigeria’s drama entry for Festac 77, held at the National Arts Theatre in Lagos. On October 1,1988, he famously played Alaafin Kanran in a drama aired on Lagos Television.
As of now, the cause of his death has not been revealed. His family has not yet made a formal announcement about the cause of death or burial arrangements.
