The Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Ruth Elton, a British-born Nigerian who is widely respected as the oldest missionary in Nigeria.
The sad news of her passing was announced in a statement released on Sunday by the governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, in Osogbo.
In his condolence message, Governor Adeleke said he was greatly saddened by her death. He described Ruth Elton’s life as a shining example of service, sacrifice, and great contributions to humanity. He explained that she lived a long life dedicated to helping people, spreading the Christian faith, and supporting communities in many ways.

The governor reminded Nigerians that Ruth Elton had been in the country for many decades. She first arrived in Nigeria in 1937 with her father, Granville Elton, who was also a missionary. From then on, she devoted her entire life to serving the Nigerian people. She worked hard to share the gospel and also played a big role in improving healthcare by helping with grassroots medical programs to save lives during emergencies.
Governor Adeleke also noted that Elton showed her deep love for Nigeria by renouncing her British citizenship and fully embracing Nigeria as her own country. According to him, this was a clear sign of her strong faith in the nation and her affection for its people, culture, and traditions.
Expressing his pain, the governor said:“I feel devastated by the passing of Ruth Elton, who is recognised as Nigeria’s oldest missionary. Even though she lived up to the good old age of 91, her death is still a painful loss because her impact and contributions were so remarkable and inspiring.”
He added: Since 1937, when she arrived with her father, Ruth Elton gave her entire life to the service of Nigeria. She was not only committed to preaching the gospel but also worked tirelessly to fight diseases and health challenges in local communities. Her passing is a heavy loss for us in Osun State, where she spent her last days. However, we are comforted by the powerful legacy she left behind and the honour that her life’s work brings to society.
The governor concluded by praying for the peaceful rest of Ruth Elton’s soul. He encouraged Christians and all people who were inspired by her life to continue her mission of service, love, and humanity, ensuring that her name and works will never be forgotten.
