DNA Tests Ordered To Confirm Paternity Of Late Singer Mohbad’s Son

The Magistrate Court sitting in Ikorodu, Lagos, has ordered that two separate DNA tests should be carried out on little Liam Aloba, the son of the late Nigerian singer, Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.

This order was given on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, by Magistrate Adefisoye Sonuga. The directive came after the court considered an application filed by Mohbad’s father, Mr. Joseph Aloba. In the application, Mr. Aloba requested that a paternity test be done to confirm if Liam is truly the biological child of his late son, Mohbad.

In the application, Mohbad’s wife, Mrs. Omowunmi Cynthia Aloba, was named as the respondent. The request was filed under the Family Court of Lagos State (Civil Procedure) 2012 and the Magistrate Courts (Civil Procedure) Rules 2009.

Mr. Aloba asked the court to allow DNA samples to be collected from Mohbad’s remains, which are currently kept at the Military Hospital in Yaba. He further requested that the DNA tests be carried out either in Lagos or in another trusted laboratory outside Lagos. In addition, he sought permission for another test to be done outside Nigeria, with the cost of that test to be fully covered by him.

According to Mr. Aloba, there is uncertainty about Liam’s true paternity, and this makes it important for the matter to be settled once and for all. He explained that knowing the truth is necessary because it affects issues like child maintenance, inheritance, and the overall well-being of the young boy.

During the hearing, Mr. Aloba was represented in court by lawyer Augustine Adegbemi, from the law chambers of Dr. Wahab Shittu (SAN) & Co. On the other hand, Mrs. Omowunmi Aloba was represented by lawyer Kabir Akingbolu. The application was not opposed by the respondent’s lawyer, and as a result, the magistrate granted the request without any resistance.

The court then directed that the DNA tests should be carried out both in an accredited hospital in Nigeria and in another recognised hospital abroad. The court also stressed that both parties, or their representatives, must be present during the collection of the samples to ensure transparency.

The case was adjourned to November 11, 2025, for further hearing and updates on the matter.

Mohbad, who was only 26 years old, died on September 12, 2023. Reports said that he sustained an injury at the back of his right arm and was treated at his Lekki residence by a nurse. He was given an injection, but not long after, he suddenly had a convulsion and tragically passed away. The young singer was buried the very next day, September 13, 2023.

However, following public outrage and questions surrounding his sudden death, the Lagos State Government ordered that his body be exhumed for a proper autopsy. His body was exhumed on September 21, 2023.

The first autopsy report, which was released on April 29, 2024, could not establish the exact cause of death because most of his internal organs had already decayed to a moderate or severe extent.

Not satisfied with the outcome, Mohbad’s family applied for another independent review. As a result, in June 2024, the Coroner ordered that a second autopsy be conducted.
