The excitement for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is growing as fans around the world watch the qualification process unfold. This tournament will be special because it will be the largest World Cup ever, with 48 teams instead of the usual 32. More countries than ever before will get the chance to play on football’s biggest stage.
Seventeen nations have already secured their place. The three host nations, United States, Mexico, and Canada, qualified automatically, as is tradition for World Cup hosts. This will also be the first time the tournament is hosted by three countries at the same time. With matches being played across North America, it promises to be a unique and wide-reaching celebration of the sport.
In Asia, Japan was the very first team to qualify when they sealed their spot on March 20, 2025. Just five days later, Iran followed with their own successful qualification. Over in Oceania, New Zealand claimed their guaranteed place by defeating New Caledonia with a strong 3–0 victory on March 24. More Asian nations have since joined the list: Jordan, South Korea, and Uzbekistan all confirmed their participation, showing how competitive the region has become. Australia, who had to work hard through the Asian qualifiers, finally secured their ticket on June 5, 2025, giving their fans plenty of joy.
In South America, the heavyweights lived up to expectations. Argentina’s qualification was confirmed after a crucial draw between Uruguay and Bolivia in March. Then, in June, both Brazil and Ecuador added their names to the growing list of teams heading to North America. By early September, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Colombia had all clinched their spots as well. Around that same time, Argentina’s place was also made official, ensuring that South America will once again be strongly represented by some of the world’s most passionate footballing nations.
Africa has also begun to shape its path. Morocco became the first African nation to qualify, continuing their rise as one of the continent’s most exciting teams. With qualification still ongoing across the region, many more African countries are expected to join them soon.
