Former world champion boxer Ricky Hatton has sadly died at the age of 46, according to Britain’s Press Association on Sunday.
Hatton, who was one of the most well-known and loved fighters in British boxing history, was found dead at his home in Hyde, a town in northwest England. Police confirmed that his death is not being treated as suspicious.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police explained:
On Sunday morning at around 6:45 a.m. (local time), officers were called to Bowlacre Road in Hyde after a member of the public raised concerns. When officers arrived, they sadly discovered the body of a 46-year-old man. At this stage, there are no suspicious circumstances connected to the death.
Ricky Hatton enjoyed an outstanding career in the ring. He became a world champion in two weight divisions—light-welterweight and welterweight. Known for his fierce and attacking style, he attracted thousands of fans and became one of the most popular British fighters of his generation. Throughout his career, he faced some of the biggest names in boxing, including Kostya Tszyu, Floyd Mayweather Jr., and Manny Pacquiao.
Outside the ring, Hatton was open about the struggles he faced with mental health, especially after retiring from professional boxing. Despite these challenges, he remained deeply respected in the sport and by fans. In July this year, he even announced plans to step back into the ring for a professional comeback fight in Dubai this December against Eisa Al Dah.
Tributes have poured in from across the boxing world. Former heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury shared his sadness, writing on Instagram:
RIP to the legend Ricky Hatton. May he rest in peace. There will only ever be one Ricky Hatton. I can’t believe this has happened,he was far too young.
Another British boxing star, Amir Khan, described Hatton as a mentor and a warrior. Posting on X (formerly Twitter), Khan wrote:
“Ricky was one of Britain’s greatest boxers. As fighters, we tell ourselves we are strong, we train hard, take punches, and get back up again. But sometimes the hardest battle happens quietly, inside the mind. Mental health is not a weakness; it’s a part of being human. We must speak about it, reach out, and support one another. Ricky, thank you for everything, for your fights, your courage, your grit, and the inspiration you gave us all.
Matchroom Boxing, one of the biggest boxing promotion companies, also shared their condolences. In a statement, they said:
We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Ricky Hatton. Our thoughts and condolences go out to his family and friends during this very difficult time. There will only ever be one Ricky Hatton.
Ricky Hatton leaves behind a legacy as not just a champion in the ring, but also as a fighter who inspired millions with his heart, determination, and honesty about life’s struggles.
