The Society for Rule of Law in Nigeria (SRLN) has accused Sahara Reporters’ founder, Omoyele Sowore, of subjecting his editorial staff to poor working conditions, alleging that reporters are not issued employment letters and are only paid per story published.
In a statement released on Sunday by its Coordinator, Dr. Chima Ubeku, after a meeting in Abuja, the group described the practice as inhumane, stressing that workers who risk their lives daily to cover stories are treated like slaves, without fixed salaries or entitlements.
BSGISTNEWS gathered that the NGO further alleged that while Sowore underpays his staff, he lives lavishly, claiming he spends over ₦200 million annually on one of his children’s school fees.
The group also criticised Sowore for campaigning that police officers should earn no less than ₦500,000 monthly while neglecting his own employees’ welfare.
Citing the Labour Act, 2004, SRLN said Sowore’s employment practices contravene Nigeria’s labour laws and urged the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) to intervene to protect journalists working with Sahara Reporters.
