A Sunday worship service turned tragic when a gunman opened fire at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, Michigan, leaving multiple people dead and the building engulfed in flames.
Authorities confirmed that there were several victims and that the suspected shooter was “down”, though it remains unclear whether he was killed or taken into custody.
According to BSGISTNEWS findings, the church building was reported to be “actively on fire”, with emergency responders working tirelessly to control the scene. Police urged residents to stay away from the area as operations continued.
“There are multiple victims and the shooter is down. There is no threat to the public at this time,” the Grand Blanc Township Police Department stated in an official Facebook post.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer condemned the attack, describing it as “unacceptable.”
“My heart is breaking for the Grand Blanc community. Violence anywhere, especially in a place of worship, is unacceptable. I am grateful to the first responders who took action quickly,” Whitmer said.
Attorney-General Pam Bondi revealed that federal agencies, including the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), have been dispatched to support the investigation.
“Such violence at a place of worship is heartbreaking and chilling. Please join me in praying for the victims of this terrible tragedy,” Bondi posted on social media.
Michigan Representative John James also reacted, expressing grief over the incident:
“On this Sunday, a day meant for worship and peace, such violence is a grave evil. Our prayers are with the victims, their families, and the entire community.”
The shocking attack comes barely a day after the passing of Russell M. Nelson, the 101-year-old president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, adding to the grief of members nationwide.
As of now, authorities have not disclosed the exact number of casualties or the possible motive behind the shooting. Investigations are still ongoing.
