Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The move, confirmed by his spokesperson Daniel Alabrah on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, comes less than 24 hours after Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah also defected from the PDP to the APC.
Governor Diri’s defection was accompanied by 23 members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, signaling a major political shift in the state ahead of the next election cycle.
Reacting to the development, the Forum of PDP State Chairmen condemned the defections, describing them as “an assault on democracy.” The forum warned that the APC’s actions could push Nigeria toward becoming a de facto one-party state, urging citizens and democratic institutions to resist such a trend.
The mass defection marks one of the most significant political realignments in the South-South region in recent years, heightening speculation about further defections within the PDP’s ranks.
