Afrobeats Grammy-winning superstar Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has opened up about the experiences and reflections that led to his spiritual transformation and eventual conversion to Islam.
The “Ye” crooner made the revelation during a Twitch live session with U.S. streamer PlaqueBoyMax, where he discussed his upbringing, personal growth, and evolving beliefs.
The 34-year-old Port Harcourt-born artist disclosed that he was raised in a devout Christian home, following the faith of his parents, who were strong believers. However, as he grew older, he began questioning and exploring spirituality on his own terms.
“I was born into Christianity because that’s what my parents practised. However, as I grew older, I began to research life and faith more deeply. That was when I found Islam,” he said.
Burna Boy explained that his conversion was not out of rebellion, but rather a deep and personal conviction. He described the decision as thoughtful and intentional, rooted in his search for peace and understanding rather than any external influence.
“It was something that came naturally to me. I just felt a connection and peace,” he added.
The artist also noted that his curiosity about faith continues to grow, expressing that the more he learns, the more he realises how much he doesn’t know but finds peace in the process.
“Even now, I’m still learning. The more I read, the more I realize how much I don’t know. But there’s peace in it, and that’s something I’ve been searching for my whole life,” he shared.
Burna Boy’s revelation has sparked mixed reactions among fans, with some applauding his decision as a reflection of maturity and personal growth, while others question how his new faith might align with his public persona and music style, known for its boldness and social commentary.
The development adds another dimension to Burna Boy’s multifaceted identity — one that has always explored themes of self-discovery, identity, and inner truth through his art.
