Five-time African champions Cameroon have been dealt a major setback ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup African playoffs in Morocco, with key players Zambo Anguissa and Eric Choupo-Moting sustaining injuries during training.
The Indomitable Lions are scheduled to face DR Congo in the second semi-final today (Thursday), with the winner set to meet either Gabon or Nigeria in Sunday’s final.
According to reports, Anguissa suffered an unspecified muscular injury during an intense training session, while Choupo-Moting also picked up a knock the same day. Both players are expected to undergo further medical tests but remain doubtful for the crucial playoff clash.
Coach Marc Brys, who recently faced criticism over his 28-man squad announcement, may now be forced to adjust his plans without two of his most experienced stars.
Cameroon secured their playoff spot after finishing second in Group D, behind Cabo Verde, following a goalless draw against Angola in their final qualifier.
While nine African nations have already qualified directly for the 2026 World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States, one of the four playoff teams; Cameroon, DR Congo, Gabon, or Nigeria will have the chance to reach the FIFA intercontinental playoff tournament in March 2026.
