Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has promised a stronger display from his team in Sunday’s decisive clash against DR Congo, after reviewing both the positives and shortcomings from their 4-1 extra-time win over Gabon.
Speaking to Flashscore, the Franco-Malian manager said he is committed to fixing the lapses observed in Thursday’s semifinal.
“I will watch this game again because we did a lot of good things, but bad things too,” Chelle said.
“We have to correct some things before the next game, and I’m confident my team will perform better than they did against Gabon.”
Nigeria were made to work hard for the victory, taking the lead in the 78th minute through Akor Adams before Mario Lemina equalised for Gabon in stoppage time. Substitute Chidera Ejuke restored the advantage in extra time, followed by a brilliant brace from Victor Osimhen to seal the 4–1 win.
Chelle reiterated that his long-term priority is establishing a distinct identity for the Super Eagles.
“The most important thing is to create an identity, how we defend, how we attack. That’s why we try to improve at every FIFA window,” he noted.
“These players have grown technically and mentally, and they understand what I want from them.”
The three-time African champions head into Sunday’s final in strong form, with five wins in their last six matches and 10 goals scored in their previous three fixtures. Chelle remains unbeaten since taking charge, recording victories over Rwanda (twice), Ghana, Lesotho, Benin Republic and Gabon, and drawing against Zimbabwe, Jamaica, Russia and South Africa.
Nigeria will take on DR Congo at the Stade Prince Héritier Moulay Hassan on Sunday at 8pm, with the winner earning a spot in the intercontinental playoffs scheduled for March 2026 in Mexico.
