Mudashiru Obasa’s recent impeachment has raised suspicions from various quarters, the impeachment of the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has been described as a “self-inflicted own goal” by political analyst Jide Ojo.
According to Ojo, Mudashiru Obasa’s snide remarks directed at Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu during the budget presentation exercise may have contributed to his downfall.
Obasa’s comment, which implied that he was more qualified to be governor than some of those in office, was perceived as disrespectful to the sitting governor.
Ojo noted that as Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa did not have immunity and was only in office at the grace of his members.
The analyst also suggested that Obasa’s behavior, including keeping the governor and party elders waiting for several hours without apology, may have been the final straw.
The President’s involvement in the matter and Mudashiru Obasa’s subsequent stubbornness and refusal to back down likely sealed his fate.
The Lagos State House of Assembly impeached Obasa on allegations of multiple statutory and financial infractions.
He was replaced by his deputy, Mojisola Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency 1.
Mojeed Fatai was also elected as the new Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
