Nigerian singer and songwriter BNXN (formerly known as Buju) has long been a master of memorable features in Afrobeats. From his unforgettable contributions to Wizkid’s “Mood”, Pheelz’s “Finesse”, Ladipoe’s “Feeling”, and Timaya’s “Cold Outside,” BNXN has consistently delivered smooth vocals that elevate any track.
While his early career was shaped by a stint with Burna Boy’s Spaceship Records, BNXN has steadily carved out his own path. With his 2022 breakout EP Bad Since ‘97 and 2023’s full-length debut Sincerely, Benson, he made clear his intent to become more than just a sought-after collaborator.
Now, with the release of his sophomore album titled Captain, BNXN declares it’s time to fully take charge.
“I’m in Total Control” – BNXN on Becoming the Captain
Speaking with Rolling Stone, BNXN described Captain as a reflection of his artistic growth and confidence. “The album itself represents growth. It shows that I’m skilled and I’m a crucial player in this field,” he said. “In the ocean of the industry, I’m rocking a ship and I’m in total control of it. In good storms and bad storms, I’m still in charge.”
BNXN singled out the title track, “Captain,” as his personal favorite: “It was one of the songs I recorded last minute. Every time I listen back to the record, it makes me feel like I made a bop for me… I’ve been listening to it every blessed day since.”
Inside Captain: A Star-Studded, Genre-Expanding Album
The 16-track album showcases BNXN’s versatility, featuring a blend of drill, Afro-fusion, and soul influences. It includes previously released singles like:
- “Phenomena” – a summer anthem with feel-good vibes. “It reminds me of sun, cocktails, happy times,” he explained.
- “Fi Kan We Kan” featuring Rema – a high-profile link-up with fellow hitmaker Rema.
- “Very Soon” featuring FOLA – a melodic, introspective joint.
- “Cutesy” – a sexy drill-inspired track produced by Jiggi, with a nod from Bronx legend Cash Cobain, who also worked with Jiggi on “Fisherrrr.”
Other featured collaborators include Seyi Vibez, Victony, and the Soweto Gospel Choir, who close out the album on the deeply emotional track “In Jesus Name.” BNXN says this final song is the most sentimental to him. “There’s a lot of emotion that went into that. They were able to bring out the spiritual feel I needed from the record.”
North American Tour Begins August
To support the album, BNXN will hit the road this August with a North American tour. Stops include Atlanta, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Dallas, and Vancouver.
