Ghana is mourning a tragic loss after two senior government officials ,Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, along with Six others, were killed in a military helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
According to reports from the state-owned Ghana News Agency, the incident occurred when the military aircraft, which was on an official mission from Accra to Obuasi, went down near Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region. Witnesses at the scene described the horrifying moment the helicopter hit the ground, bursting into flames that consumed the entire aircraft. By the time rescue teams arrived, the wreckage had been burned beyond recognition.

In an official statement released on Wednesday the Ghana Armed Forces confirmed that the ill-fated helicopter was carrying a total of eight people, three crew members and five passengers, including the two ministers. Military authorities explained that the aircraft had gone off radar mid-flight, prompting urgent efforts to re-establish communication. Tragically, those attempts were unsuccessful, and the crash was later confirmed.
The ministers and other passengers were reportedly en route to attend an official engagement in the Ashanti Region. Their deaths have sent shockwaves across the country, with political leaders, citizens, and international observers expressing deep sorrow and solidarity with Ghana.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is expected to issue a national address in the coming hours, while the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority and the Military Accident Investigation Board have launched an urgent inquiry to determine the cause of the fatal crash.
Flags across government buildings are anticipated to be flown at half-mast in honor of the victims. Meanwhile, security has been tightened at key state installations as the nation grapples with this devastating blow to its leadership.
This tragedy marks one of the deadliest air disasters in Ghana in recent years, underscoring ongoing concerns over the safety of military and government air transport operations.
