Early Life and Humble Beginnings

Tunde Onakoya born and raised in Ikorodu, Lagos, Onakoya’s story is one of resilience. He grew up in a low-income neighborhood where opportunities were scarce and survival often trumped dreams. But one thing changed everything: chess.

He learned the game in a barbershop, drawn to the quiet intensity and strategy it demanded. What started as a simple pastime would later become a life-altering passion.

Education and Rise to Prominence

Tunde pursued his education at the Yaba College of Technology, where he studied Computer Science. But while in school, he never let go of chess. He competed, coached, and gradually began to see the power of the game not just as a sport, but as a tool for transformation.

Recognizing the potential to make a difference, he founded Chess in Slums Africa, a non-profit organization using chess to educate and empower children in some of Nigeria’s most disadvantaged communities.

Chess in Slums Africa: A Movement of Hope

Through Chess in Slums Africa, Tunde has reached hundreds of children in areas like Makoko, Oshodi, and Majidun, providing not only chess lessons but also access to education, mentorship, and life-changing opportunities. Many of these children have gone on to win national competitions, receive scholarships, and find renewed hope in life.

Breaking the World Record

In April 2025, Tunde made international headlines when he played chess for 62 hours straight in New York City’s Times Square, setting a new Guinness World Record. More than a test of endurance, it was a powerful charity initiative aimed at raising $1 million to build Nigeria’s largest free school for homeless children.
