Warri Refinery confirms that oil marketers are set to begin lifting Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, from the Warri Refinery in February 2025.
This development comes as the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) confirmed that its members have already started lifting automotive gas oil (diesel) and kerosene from the refinery.
According to Harry Okenini, Chairman of the Delta State chapter of IPMAN, the Warri Refinery is currently producing diesel and kerosene, with plans to start producing petrol and other products by February.
“For now, only diesel and kerosene are being produced and loaded out for consumption. Hopefully, by February, we are expecting cooking gas, PMS, and other products to come out,” Okenini stated.
Israel Omokere, National Chairman of the Surface Tank and Kerosene Peddlers, a branch of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), also confirmed that the refinery is operational.
“We are loading kerosene and diesel for now, and hopefully, petrol will come on board soon,” Omokere said.
The Warri Refinery, which has a capacity of 125,000 barrels per day, commenced operation on December 30, 2024, according to Mele Kyari, Group Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC).
However, Kyari noted that the refinery is not yet 100% operational.
Industrial sources familiar with the refinery’s operations revealed that only one of the three units is currently functional, producing diesel, gas, and kerosene.
The development has sparked calls from industry stakeholders, including the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN), to sell the Warri and Kaduna refineries to private investors for efficient management.
