President Bola Tinubu has appointed Omotenioye Majekodunmi as the new Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), marking a strategic shift in the leadership of Nigeria’s climate policy institution.
Majekodunmi takes over from Nkiruka Madueke, the pioneer Director-General of the council, who was appointed in June 2024. In an official statement released on Thursday, President Tinubu expressed gratitude to Madueke for her “dedicated service” and the “strong foundation” she established during her tenure.
According to Bsgistnews, Majekodunmi is an environmental lawyer and climate finance expert with more than 17 years of experience working across renewable energy, carbon markets, and climate governance. Her appointment signals a reinforcement of Nigeria’s stance on climate action, particularly at the intersection of economic sustainability and environmental stewardship.
Before assuming the DG role, Majekodunmi served as the financial adviser to the NCCC, where she played a central role in shaping Nigeria’s climate finance strategies and contributing to the country’s global climate diplomacy.
The presidency noted that her appointment reflects Tinubu’s broader commitment to addressing climate change “as both an environmental necessity and a driver of sustainable economic growth.” With this transition, expectations are high for accelerated implementation of green policies, climate-resilient infrastructure, and deepened international partnerships.
Majekodunmi is expected to steer the NCCC through its next phase of development, focusing on innovative climate financing, inclusive environmental governance, and Nigeria’s energy transition agenda.
