Giorgia Meloni, Italian Prime Minister, made a surprise visit to incoming US President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida on Sunday.
The meeting between the two conservative leaders was kept under wraps, with no official statement released by Giorgia Meloni’s office.
However, photos of the pair posing together at the entrance of Mar-a-Lago and chatting in a reception room, with a Christmas tree in the background, were published on the front pages of Italy’s newspapers.
Prime Minister Meloni’s visit comes ahead of a significant meeting between US President Joe Biden and Pope Francis in Rome.
Biden is scheduled to visit Rome for four days, where he will meet with Giorgia Meloni and hold separate talks with the Pope.
This visit is particularly noteworthy, given the timing of Trump’s upcoming inauguration on January 20.
Meloni is not the only foreign leader to have paid a visit to Trump recently.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban have also met with the incoming US President.
Meloni, who heads the far-right Brothers of Italy party, has been making headlines with her diplomatic efforts, having already met with various world leaders, including Biden, in recent months.
