Kemi Badenoch, UK Conservative Party Leader’s claims about her upbringing in Nigeria has been dismissed by Nigeria’s Presidency as “a cock and bull story” and “lies.”
President Bola Tinubu’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Temitope Ajayi, accused Kemi Badenoch of fabricating stories about her experiences in Nigeria to gain sympathy and advance her political career.
Ajayi specifically took issue with Kemi Badenoch’s claim that policemen stole her brother’s shoe in Nigeria, questioning the validity of the story.
He also disputed her accounts of carrying a desk and chair to school and lacking access to clean water, given her upper-middle-class upbringing.
Badenoch’s comments about Nigeria date back to 2022, when she accused Nigerian politicians of misusing public funds.
Her recent election as UK Conservative Party leader has brought renewed attention to her claims about her Nigerian upbringing.
The Nigerian government, through the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), attempted to reach out to Badenoch after her election, but she declined.
Ajayi’s response suggests that the Nigerian government is taking issue with Badenoch’s portrayal of Nigeria and her experiences there.
