NAFDAC (The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control) has issued a public alert warning Nigerians about a counterfeit cancer treatment drug, Phesgo 600mg/600mg/10ml, with batch number C5290S20.
This alert comes after a doctor at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital reported a suspected counterfeit product.
Phesgo is used to treat breast cancer by killing cancer cells and preventing their growth.
However, the counterfeit version poses serious health risks, as it may not meet regulatory standards, compromising safety, quality, and effectiveness.
NAFDAC’s investigation revealed significant differences between the counterfeit product and genuine samples, including discrepancies in language, missing labels, and incorrect dates.
The agency urges healthcare providers, importers, distributors, retailers, and caregivers to be vigilant and cautious throughout the supply chain.
To ensure safety, the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control advises obtaining medical products only from authorized and licensed suppliers, carefully checking their authenticity and physical condition.
The agency also encourages reporting any suspicions of substandard or falsified medicines to the nearest NAFDAC office or through their contact number (0800-162-3322) or email (sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng).
Additionally, the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control provides e-reporting platforms on its website and through the Med-Safety app for reporting adverse events or side effects related to medicinal products or devices.
The agency will also upload the product notification to the World Health Organization’s Global Surveillance and Monitoring System.
