Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory has imposed a two-week ban on used items markets, commonly known as “Panteka,” in the FCT, effective immediately.
This decision was announced during the FCT Security Council meeting and shared by Nyesom Wike’s media aide, Lere Olayinka, on X.
The ban aims to address concerns related to scavenging activities within Abuja.
As part of the new regulations, scavengers are now restricted to operating only at designated dump sites.
This move is intended to maintain order and ensure the safety of residents within the FCT.
Wike’s directive also emphasizes that individuals arrested for vandalizing public infrastructure will face severe consequences, including charges of economic sabotage and attempted murder.
Key aspects of the ban by Nyesom Wike include;
– Two-week suspension: All Panteka markets in the FCT are suspended for two weeks, effective from January 14, 2025.
– Restrictions on scavenging: Scavenging activities are now limited to dump sites, and scavengers are prohibited from operating within the Abuja city centre and its environs.
– Consequences for vandalism: Individuals found guilty of vandalizing public infrastructure will face charges of economic sabotage and attempted m*rder.
