Bala Mohammed, the Bauchi State Governor has set an eight-week deadline for the Visitation Panel of Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU) to resolve the lingering crisis with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The panel’s primary objective is to identify the root causes of the strike, conduct a thorough review of the university’s financial operations, and develop a comprehensive strategy for effective management.
Governor Bala Mohammed emphasized the importance of the panel’s work in restoring normalcy to the university, which has been plagued by disruptions in teaching and learning.
He stressed that education is the foundation for meaningful development and assured that his administration is committed to addressing the challenges facing the sector.
The panel, chaired by Prof. Gambo Laraba, has been tasked with finding lasting solutions to the crisis between ASUU, NASU, and the university management.
Despite earlier interventions, the issues persist, and Governor Bala Mohammed is determined to find a permanent solution.
The ASUU chapter at SAZU had previously suspended an indefinite strike over grievances such as non-implementation of pension and death benefit schemes, unpaid allowances, and the controversial appointment of a polytechnic graduate as bursar.
The strike was suspended following Governor Bala Mohammed’s personal engagement with the union in mid-December 2024.
The Visitation Panel’s report is expected to provide valuable insights and recommendations for reforms in the institution, ultimately leading to a harmonious and productive academic environment.
