Dele Farotimi’s arrest and subsequent incarceration has made Nigerians set to take to the streets on December 10 to protest for his release from custody.
The protest, organized by the Take It Back Movement and supported by activists like Omoyele Sowore, will be held in multiple locations, including Lagos, Abuja, Ado-Ekiti, and London.
Farotimi was arrested by the Ekiti State Police Command on Tuesday and accused of defaming Afe Babalola, a prominent lawyer and founder of Afe Babalola University, in his book “Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System”.
He was arraigned in court on Wednesday and remanded in prison custody until December 10.
The protest is a response to widespread outrage over Dele Farotimi’s arrest, with many Nigerians calling for his immediate release.
The Take It Back Movement has urged protesters to converge on the designated locations to demand justice for Farotimi and to express their dissatisfaction with the Nigerian judiciary.
Sowore, a prominent activist, has also called for a global revolt against the Nigerian judiciary, starting from December 10.
He has urged Nigerians and supporters around the world to join the protest and demand an end to what he describes as “judicial impunity”.
The protest is expected to draw attention to the issues of free speech, judicial independence, and the rule of law in Nigeria.
