NAFDAC (The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control) has issued a stern warning to bakeries across Nigeria, prohibiting the use of saccharin and bromate in bread production.
This move is aimed at safeguarding public health and maintaining the integrity of food products.
Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, NAFDAC’s Director-General, emphasized that bakeries found guilty of using these harmful substances will face severe penalties, including shutdowns.
“We have closed down several bakeries for using bromate in bread production. If we discover or suspect that bromate has been used in bread, we will shut the bakery immediately,” she stated.
NAFDAC’s post-marketing surveillance plays a crucial role in monitoring compliance, with routine inspections and product sampling to ensure that registered products meet the required standards .
The agency has also closed down numerous water-producing factories for substandard production or unhygienic environments.
Adeyeye highlighted the importance of the Regulatory Inspection Directorate in ensuring that products in the market match the standards approved during registration.
“Sometimes, after registration, producers alter the production process or formula, which is unacceptable. This is why post-marketing surveillance monitoring is vital,” she explained.
NAFDAC’s warning serves as a reminder of the agency’s commitment to protecting public health and maintaining stringent regulatory standards.
Bakeries are urged to adhere to the guidelines and avoid using saccharin and bromate in bread production to avoid severe consequences.
