The National Executive Council (NEC) has finally decided to enhance the implementation of the National Electrification Strategy which is aimed at bringing an end to the reocurring collapse of the Nation’s power grid.
Bsgistnews.com gathered from news sources that, the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Kashim Shettima, informed the members of National Executive Council that access to energy is a fundamental right and not a privilege because electricity is the oxygen of economic growth.
This is following a presentation made by the Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) wherein NEC observed that Nigeria needs a reformed and diversified electricity system while also noting that by empowering states, accessibility and affordability of electricity can be enabled.
Therefore in a bid to achieve that, National Executive Council established a committee on National Electrification for the purpose addressing the challenges faced in the power sector.
The committee established by NEC and which is chaired by the Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu, is to ensure that they work towards deepening states’ engagements within the Electricity Reform Act 2023 and the National Electrification Strategy and Implementation Plan.
Members of the committee includes; Governors Ademola Adeleke of Osun, Dikko Radda of Katsina, Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau, Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe and Hope Uzodimma of Imo.
Others are Ministers of Power, Adebayo Adelabu; Finance; Wale Edun; Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu; Special Adviser to the President on NEC and Climate Change; Special Adviser to the President on Power; Managing Director, Rural Electrification Agency (REA), and Managing Director, Niger Delta Power Holding Company.
The formation of the committee was among the decisions taken by NEC at the end of its 146th meeting on Thursday which was chaired by Mr Shettima at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
