Nigerian Army in a significant breakthrough has apprehended Bako Wurgi, a notorious bandit leader and arms dealer, linked to the m*rder of the Emir of Gobir, Isa Mohammad Bawa, in Sokoto State.
Wurgi, also known as Baka NaGarba, was arrested on Saturday by troops of the 1 Brigade, Nigerian Army, following intelligence reports that he was receiving treatment at a hospital in Shinkafi town, Zamfara State.
According to Zagazola Makama, a Lake Chad Basin counterterr*rism and insurgency expert, Wurgi’s arrest was made possible by intelligence sources who revealed that he had been transported to the hospital with multiple cuts and gunshot wounds.
During the operation, two of Wurgi’s accomplices fled, but troops arrested another individual who assisted in transporting the suspect in a tricycle.
Wurgi is suspected to have played a key role in the kidn*pping and subsequent m*rder of the Emir of Gobir, which involved ransom negotiations that included cash and motorcycles but ultimately failed.
The late Emir was abd*cted on July 9, 2024, in Sabon Birnin Local Government Area, Sokoto State, and m*rdered on August 22 after negotiations for his release collapsed.
Wurgi’s Connections to the Banditry Network;
Wurgi, an arms sm*ggler with international connections, is reportedly related to Bello Turji, a notorious bandit leader, through his grandfather.
His son, Sani Duna, is alleged to act as a getaway biker for Turji, highlighting familial links within the banditry network.
Wurgi’s arrest marks a significant milestone in ongoing efforts to combat terr*rism and banditry in the Northwest region by the Nigerian Army.
He is currently being held at an undisclosed location, while a manhunt is underway for his accomplices.
