Senator Orji Kalu, representing Abia North, has expressed concerns over the federal government’s approach to the tax reform bills.
In an interview with Arise Television, Senator Orji Kalu stated that the government erred by not involving key stakeholders, including the National Executive Council, Nigeria Governor’s Forum, and the Council of State, in the process.
Despite his criticism, Kalu acknowledged that the bills are progressive and could potentially bring back fiscal federalism in Nigeria.
However, he emphasized that the initiators of the bills should have briefed the relevant stakeholders, including the National Economic Council and Governors’ Forum.
The tax reform bills, which include the Nigeria Tax Bill 2024, the Tax Administration Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill, were sent to the National Assembly for passage in October 2024.
The bills gained momentum last week after securing a second-reading passage at the Senate.
Notably, the Northern Governor’s Forum and National Economic Council have called for the bill’s withdrawal, while economic experts have backed the tax reform bill, citing its potential to boost Nigeria’s revenue.
