Seyi Makinde, Oyo State Governor has vowed to prosecute individuals who accepted bribes during the selection process of the Alaafin of Oyo.
Governor Seyi Makinde made this statement while presenting the staff of office to Abimbola Owoade, the newly appointed Alaafin of Oyo, at the Oyo State Government House in Ibadan.
The governor’s announcement comes amidst controversy surrounding the selection process.
A faction of the Oyomesi, the traditional kingmakers, had opposed Owoade’s appointment, instead supporting Lukman Gbadegesin.
However, allegations of bribery have surfaced, with claims that Gbadegesin offered N15 million to each of the five kingmakers.
Seyi Makinde emphasized that the Alaafin stool will not be compromised under his watch and warned that those who attempted to destabilize the traditional institution would face prosecution.
He added that only if the individuals apologize and receive forgiveness from the monarch will he consider forgiving them.
This development highlights Governor Seyi Makinde’s commitment to upholding transparency and accountability in traditional institutions.
As the governor of Oyo State, Makinde has been focused on promoting good governance and economic growth, as evident from the state’s economic progress under his administration.
