Socialist Party of Nigeria (SPN) has called for the immediate release of three individuals detained in connection with the December 18 stampede in Ibadan that claimed the lives of over 35 children.
The detainees include Mr. Abdullahi Fasasi, Principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan; Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, proprietor of Agidigbo FM; and Olori Naomi Silekunola, a former wife of Ooni of Ile Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi according to the Socialist Party of Nigeria.
The Socialist Party of Nigeria described the detention and prosecution of the trio as diversionary, emphasizing that the government should focus on addressing the root causes of poverty in the country.
The Socialist Party argued that policies like privatization, devaluation, and deregulation have contributed to widespread poverty and starvation among working-class Nigerians.
In a statement, the SPN’s Oyo State Secretary, Comrade Ayodeji Adigun, expressed support for the growing demand for the release of the detained individuals.
The party also called for adequate compensation for the relatives and families of the victims.
Meanwhile, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has demanded equal treatment for the organizers of similar events in Abuja and Anambra, where stampedes also occurred, resulting in fatalities.
MURIC’s Executive Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, questioned why only the Ibadan organizers were arrested, while those in Abuja and Anambra were not held accountable.
