The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria praised the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the dismissal of the Vice-Chancellor of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Prof Bernard Udoh as well as the Registrar, Mrs Rosemary Nwokike.
The said association who had embarked on a seven-day warning strike on Monday, the 18th of November, 2024 used it as a medium to press forth its demands to the Federal Government, which was inclusive of the dismissal of the UNIZIK VC.
Bsgistnews.com gathered that the strike was said to have grounded medical activities in 83 health facilities as well as 64 medical schools across the country.
The association had earlier objected over the exclusion of medical lecturers from appointment as UNIZIK VC.
It requested that the Federal Government should replace the Chairman of the Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, as council chairman strictly due to his insubordination as well as to develop an all inclusive prototype of advertisements for the Office of Vice-Chancellor of the University and to enforce the Ministry of Education’s directive nullifying any appointments subsequent to their directives.
According to the the National President of MDCAN, Prof Muhammad Muhammad while speaking to the news reporters.
He said “We just met with the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Dr Ipalibo Banigo, today (Wednesday), and she has appealed to us to at least consider the public, and promised to meet with the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education with respect to all our demands by next week”.
“We have a meeting with the Ministry of Labour and Employment today (Thursday). Thereafter, the meeting with the Ministry of Labour as the National Executive Council can then schedule a meeting for Friday to know what to do next.”
President Tinubu’s Action;
Finally granting the request of the association on Wednesday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu dissolved the Governing Council of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State, and removed the newly appointed Vice Chancellor and Registrar.
The NAU council, led by Greg Ozumba Mbadiwe, included five other members; Hafiz Oladejo, Augustine Onyedebelu, and Amioleran Osahon, and Gen. Funsho Oyeneyin (retd.).
In a statement signed by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the President, Mr. Bayo Onanuga and titled “President Tinubu sacks Nnamdi Azikiwe University Council, VC and Registrar” pointed out that, “The sacking of the governing council and officials followed reports that the council illegally appointed an unqualified vice-chancellor without following due process.
The government therefore expressed concern over the council’s apparent disregard for the university’s governing laws in its selection process.”
