The House of Representatives had on Thursday beckoned for an increase in the budgetary allocation to the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs for the purpose of making provisions of shelter homes for women suffering from gender-based violence.

This move was made by the House after the motion was sponsored by the member representing Kosofe Federal Constituency, Lagos State, Mrs Kafilat Ogbara.

In her statement, she said, “The House is concerned that systemic discrimination, cultural norms, and societal attitudes contribute to the perpetration of gender-based violence against women, necessitating comprehensive strategies for prevention and response.

The House is also concerned that gender-based violence against women and girls remains largely unreported due to impunity, silence, stigma, and shame surrounding it”.

Ogbara went further to state that gender-based violence against women is also a pervasive violation of human rights that affects millions of women and girls globally and as such manifesting in physical, sexual, and psychological harm.

She beckoned on Nigerians to be actively involved in the advocacy so as to raise the awareness of the various forms of gender-based violence against women which includes but not limited to; tr*fficking, s*xual harassment, domestic v*olence and other harmful practices such as female genital mutilation and child marriage.

Several lawmakers including Alhassan Doguwa representing Kano State and Eze Nwachukwu representing Ebonyi State pledged their unwavering support for the motion.

Thereafter, the motion was adopted after which the House beckoned on the Ministry of Budget and National Planning to increase the funding allocated to the Ministry of Women Affairs so as to make provisions for shelter homes for victims of gender- based violence, ensuring they have unlimited access to all the necessary care and support.
