The MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited has announced the commencement of a mass prepaid metering programme under the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) scheme, set to launch across its operational network in Enugu State on Wednesday.
The company’s Head of Corporate Communications, Mr. Emeka Ezeh, revealed the development in a statement issued on Monday in Enugu, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Ezeh disclosed that the mobile MAP metering programme would begin in the Abakpa and Ogui Districts, offering unmetered customers the opportunity to receive a prepaid meter within 72 hours.
“This initiative is designed to accelerate the metering process, eliminate estimated billing, and promote transparency in electricity consumption and billing,” he stated.
The company plans to roll out the metering programme in phases to cover all district offices within the MainPower network.
Ezeh urged customers in the selected districts to take advantage of the opportunity, emphasizing that accurate metering empowers users to track and manage their electricity usage while eliminating billing disputes.
Customers who wish to participate in the programme are required to visit designated metering locations with the following:
- A recent electricity bill
- A valid means of identification
Meter prices are as follows:
- Single-phase meter: ₦137,062.50
- Three-phase meter: ₦227,900
These prices are inclusive of 7.5% VAT and are subject to monthly review, the company stated.
Ezeh emphasized that only Debit/ATM cards would be accepted for payment during the programme and warned that cash payments will not be allowed.
The Enugu DisCo reassured customers that the process is transparent, with no hidden charges apart from the cost of the meter.
“Customers are encouraged to report any form of extortion through our official whistle-blowing line: 08146026678,” Ezeh added.
While the special mobile metering initiative is ongoing, the regular MAP application process remains active. Customers unable to attend the mobile metering locations can still:
- Visit any MainPower district office
- Or apply via the official company website
“Our goal is to bridge the metering gap, support energy efficiency, and ensure that more customers enjoy the benefits of prepaid metering,” Ezeh said.
