In a grand celebration of national pride and sporting excellence, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has honoured the Super Falcons of Nigeria with national awards, $100,000 each, and fully furnished homes following their triumphant victory at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
At a special reception held on Monday at the State House in Abuja, President Tinubu announced the conferment of the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) on each of the 24 players who delivered Nigeria’s record 10th WAFCON title in stunning fashion against host nation Morocco.
Unprecedented Reward Package for the Champions
In addition to the national honour, each Super Falcons player received:
- $100,000 cash reward
- A fully furnished 3-bedroom apartment
- National recognition as Officers of the Order of the Niger (OON)
Members of the technical crew were also generously rewarded with $50,000 each for their strategic roles in guiding the team to continental glory.
The gestures were met with wild applause and emotional reactions from players, coaches, and dignitaries, as the event marked a high point in the history of women’s football in Nigeria.
A Historic Comeback in Rabat
The Super Falcons’ dramatic 3–2 comeback win over Morocco in Rabat stunned football fans across Africa. Down 2–0 at halftime, the Nigerian team showed resilience and tactical brilliance to turn the game around, clinching their 10th WAFCON crown; the most by any nation on the continent.
The victory reasserted Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football and reignited national pride in the team’s fighting spirit and unity.
Warm Reception and First Lady’s Support
Before meeting with the President, the Super Falcons were warmly received by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu and the wife of the Vice President, Nana Shettima, in a heartfelt welcome that celebrated the team’s legacy and womanhood.
The First Lady commended the players for being “symbols of strength, excellence, and hope” for millions of Nigerian girls.
Tinubu’s Pledge to Women’s Sports Development
During the reception, President Tinubu expressed admiration for the team’s courage and commitment, calling them “national heroes” who have uplifted the spirit of the nation. He also used the opportunity to reaffirm his government’s dedication to investing in sports especially women’s football.
“The Super Falcons have proven that with resilience, teamwork, and national pride, nothing is impossible,” Tinubu said. “We will continue to support and invest in sports so that more young Nigerians can find hope, inspiration, and opportunity through it.”
