Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has absolved President Bola Tinubu of any blame in the ongoing crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing the turmoil as self-inflicted.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, Fayose declared that the PDP is “dead” and beyond revival, adding that he would not take part in any attempt to resurrect it. He also suggested that more defections from the opposition party are imminent.
He dismissed claims that the presidency was behind the recent defections of Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri and Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah to the All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting their decisions were based on personal political interests.
“President Tinubu should not be blamed for PDP’s problems. The PDP is sick and remains perpetually sick without a cure in view. Those who killed the party know themselves,” Fayose said.
The former governor, who remains a PDP member, revealed that three additional governors are preparing to leave the party, which would reduce the number of PDP governors to five.
“Let me tell you, there are three more governors that will leave soon. There will be five remaining, and among them, one will struggle to secure the ticket; they all know that the ticket is an ordinary tissue paper,” he stated.
Fayose attributed the party’s decline to internal power struggles, accusing its leaders of prioritizing control over unity and long-term stability.
“They are largely killing the party because they want to control it. This is what happened in 2023,” he added.
Despite his continued membership, Fayose made it clear that he does not feel compelled to help revive the PDP, stressing that the party’s internal decay began long before recent defections.
His comments come amid speculation about further defections and growing concerns over the PDP’s future, as it struggles to rebuild after its defeat in the 2023 general elections.
