Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has issued a stern warning to vandals who have been stealing sewage manhole covers on highways in Abuja.
Those arrested in connection with the theft will face the full force of the law, serving as a deterrent to others.
This measure aims to protect the lives and properties of residents in the capital territory.
Nyesom Wike also emphasized that buyers and users of vandalized public infrastructure will be arrested and prosecuted for economic sabotage.
The minister commended security agencies for their prompt actions and collaborative efforts, which have resulted in the arrest of about 50 suspected vandals and the recovery of 25 vandalized manhole covers.
The minister urged Nigerians to take an active role in safeguarding public amenities, stating that it is their duty as owners and users of these amenities.
Nyesom Wike encouraged patriotic Nigerians to expose those involved in vandalism, emphasizing that they live among us and are known.
This crackdown on vandalism comes as the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC) has also reported the arrest of high-level contractors and an expatriate involved in the vandalism of streetlights and other road infrastructure in the FCT.
