NLC (The Nigeria Labour Congress) has reiterated its call for the federal government to withdraw the Tax Reform Bills currently before the National Assembly.
According to NLC President Joe Ajaero, the bills must be inclusive and transparent to gain nationwide acceptance and drive national development.
In his New Year message, Ajaero emphasized the need for collective effort and determination to address Nigeria’s economic challenges.
He stressed that the welfare of citizens remains the primary justification for any government’s existence.
Key Expectations of NLC for 2025;
The NLC has outlined several key expectations for the government in 2025, including:
– Access to basic necessities: Food and nutrition, better healthcare, quality housing, education, and transportation
– Security and participation: Greater security of lives and properties, as well as the right to participate in decisions on governance
– Transparency and inclusivity: Policies that reflect transparency, honesty, and inclusivity, devoid of nepotism and strong-arm tactics
Ajaero also advocated for a system built on social dialogue, allowing critical stakeholders to participate actively in nation-building.
This, he believes, will foster deeper ownership of government policies, ensuring stability and sustainability.
The Nigeria Labour Congress has announced plans to participate in a national dialogue in Ibadan in January 2025, aimed at co-creating a new national tax law that would enjoy wider acceptance and propel national development.
